Nature-Themed MRI Scan Could Reduce Patient Anxiety

Lots of people do not like the idea of getting into an MRI scan, as it can feel quite claustrophobic and anxiety-inducing. However, making a simple change, such as decorating the machine in nature-themed vinyl, could make a big difference in how patients respond to the scan.

A GE Healthcare scanner was recently introduced that has pictures of nature for patients to look at and is lighter and bigger inside. This was designed to help those who are scared of small spaces, as well as children who often find MRI scans daunting.

Scans can cost thousands of pounds and have long waiting lists, particularly as a theatre and anaesthetist might be required if the patient has to be sedated as they are so nervous.

Therefore, enabling MRI radiographers to make them feel more comfortable during their experience could save healthcare providers a lot of money and shorten waiting lists for scans.

As well as looking more inviting, the scanners are fitted with audiovisual systems that allow patients to watch videos or listen to music.

According to The Society of Radiographers, nine out of ten people claimed that listening to music and watching videos helped them to be able to complete their scan.

By enabling more people to use the scanners, this could help patients receive an earlier diagnosis of cancer, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, brain injuries, and strokes. Subsequently, they could get treatment sooner and improve their prognosis.

As MRIs scan the whole body, including soft tissues, and show images from all angles, they are very effective at providing lots of detail for doctors to be able to diagnose a patient.

For instance, they can find out how big a tumour is, if it has spread, what the blood flow is, how effective a treatment has been, and how deeply it has grown into the body tissues.
